Ian is sick. Our doctors office doesnt have office hours on Friday. But our doctor is on call at the local hospital all weekend. So they are calling in a prescription for him and then we need to take him in on Monday so they can confirm the antibiotics are doing the job. Our doctors office is awesome.
Michael feels like he is getting sick. I am hoping he's not, but this illness seems to be winding its course through the entire family.
I did manage to get quite a bit accomplished yesterday. Today, not so much. My brother took the three boys (my son, stepson and nephew) to see a late movie. They didnt get home until 1:30 in the morning. I waited up. So I did not get to bed until after 2. Woke up very late today and planning on going to bed early tonight. Would like to go to church tomorrow but with Ians fever and overall illness I dont see it happening.
My nephew is leaving tomorrow for his Dads. Mom is driving him to the airport, which is two hours away. My son is riding with them. They're leaving early so they can stop and eat breakfast on the way.
Saddened by the death of Farrah - she was a beautiful yet fragile fighter; not so much by Jacko. The fruitage of his life was suspect and somewhat foul. I truly hope for his sake that his mindframe had changed by the time he passed.

Update from this lazy blogger
Aside from Buster disappearing, goings-on include:
-went on the Emmaus walk. It was a refreshing change of pace from the regular grind. Lots of praying, listening, laughing, hugging and preaching.
-My nephew is here for a visit. He'll leave Saturday to go see his dad and then come back to see us again after that.
-We (me, Mom, Katy and Ian) have all been sick with flu-like/upper respiratory illness of some sort. Me and Mom got sent for x-rays, mom for acute bronchitis, me for pneumonia-suspect. Haven't heard anything back. In the meantime, we got put on fairly strong antibiotics and are slowly recovering.
-Between illness and weather woes, we still haven't gotten the garden planted. :(
-Speaking of weather, today and the last couple of days have been scorchers. In the low 90's with heat indices close to 100. Real humid. I have been grateful for air conditioning. Even tho I hate the canned stale air, its better than drowning in our own sweat.
-Son Connor & nephew Sean caught a garter snake. Taking a page out of Bear Grylls notebook, they proceeded to gut and skin it, cook it over a fire and eat it. **shudder** Said it tasted like charred chicken.
-Pappy is still laid off. Having a hard time finding employment. This recession blows.
-I would like to get my bipolar pills (otherwise known as my bat pills or nutjob pills...lol) tweaked again. I am experiencing...how can I put this?...uhm, like breaks in coverage, I guess is the best way to describe it. Not horrible, but I think with todays modern medicine, I can get better coverage. Theres no reason not to have 24/7 stability.
-I am hoping to get lots done around the house today. Due to illness, I have basicially lain around and done nothing for a week. Lets just say, this house REALLY needs attention! lol
I may post more later today when my thoughts are not so scattered. Kids are fussing and arguing and whining, so I need to get off here and start directing some children. Ta Ta

Buster is gone
A day or so after my last post, my dog Buster disappeared. Its my gut feeling that whatever got Nikita got him too. We still have Roscoe but after that I dont want anymore outdoor dogs. Not while we live here anyway. It's too hard to get attached and then lose them. It would be easier in some way if they had been hit by a car or something. But just to go missing and never come home, we can only speculate and mourn.

Camp and Stuff
Tomorrow, I am going away for three days. It's called LOVE Emmaus and it's a non-denominational Christian camp, a pretty intense three day camp. It's my first time, so I don't really know what to expect. My friend Brenda sponsored me. I am hoping I get a room to myself because of my sleep apnea. It's not selfish, it's because when I am not on my CPAP I snore like a runaway freight train. I am taking the CPAP with me but that is not a guarantee that I will be able to sleep with it on all night every night. I am really looking forward to this!
I just got off the phone with my aunt. One of my cousins overdosed on some heart medicine and is in ICU - he just about didn't survive this. He is bipolar and schizophrenic and my aunt and uncle have been thru hell and back with him. Another one of my relatives' husband died and my aunt was mainly calling about funeral arrangements.
Our lawnmower pooped out...well, it will turn on, but it won't move. We think maybe a gear belt has slipped or something. The Sears repair man will be out sometime today. I am hoping to get the lawn mowed before I go away.
Speaking of going away, my older two are away at an ROTC Leadership camp this week, thru Friday afternoon. I hope this camp is as good for them as I think it will be. They left from the school on Monday morning, which was the last day of class for the school district.
My nephew is coming to stay with us at the end of June, then flying out to spend some time with his dad (my older bro) and then will return to stay here a little while longer. We are looking forward to a good visit with him. I need to come up with some activities to do with the kids while he's here. Mostly, I think, we'll be going to the pool each day.
OH YEAH....on the front page of the local paper the other day, a mountain lion (cougar) was spotted less than a mile from where we live, just the other day. It was confirmed by some mountain lion watch outfit, along with wolf tracks. Needless to say, the kids are no longer allowed to go to the bottom without an adult. That just really gives me the heebies jeebies. Especially the mountain lion. Those things are sneaky and prone to stalking easy prey like humans. They are fast and people who've survived attacks by them say they never even knew something was there until they were hit by the lion. Bears have been spotted here too, but the bears and wolves and coyotes...they don't really scare me because they generally steer clear of humans. We are wondering if the dogs have been tangling with either the mountain lion or wolves. Buster and Roscoe showed up several weeks ago all tore up bleeding all over the place and have stayed close to home since then. And Nikita disappearing last fall, obviously she tangled with something.

Summer-ness
It is in the mid to upper 80's right now, sunny without a cloud in the sky. The pool is opening this weekend and we are well on our way to summer.
We're going to plant some stuff in the garden this evening and hopefully more on Sunday. We have a ton of potatoes and tomatoes and onions and peppers and we really need to get them in the ground. We've got three garden patches plowed up and the plan is to get all that and a bunch of other stuff planted like herbs and beans and such.
Bad news on the health front for me: my thyroid has quit working. So I got put on a medication called Synthroid, which I have to take for the rest of my life. My Metformin (for diabetes) was not enough at 500mg, so she bumped it up to 2000mg per day. It's still not enough, but I'll take my blood sugar several times a day for four or five more days before I call her. It's not enough because my blood sugar reading today was 201. My target is about 70. She also expressed a desire to start me on a cholesterol medication but said my liver functions were up (or down, whatever), so now she is testing for liver functions...with the suspicion being that I have hepatitis. I don't think I do because I was innoculated against it when I was in the military. But there are five kinds of hepatitis, so it is possible I have it, just not highly likely. But for whatever reason my liver is acting up enough that she wont put me on a cholesterol med, so its cause for concern. I can deal with taking synthetic thyroid, but looking at potential liver failure....that bites. Oh yes, also my blood pressure is up, borderline needing medicine. I am sure that's just around the corner.
As of 2006, I was a heavy smoker, occasional drinker, on no meds. Since then, I have quit smoking, been diagnosed with sleep apnea - now sleeping with a CPAP machine, broken my ankle, torn up my left knee, been diagnosed as bipolar and thusly medicated, diagnosed with restless legs syndrome, diagnosed as diabetic, and all the above stuff.
It seems like the more I try to take care of myself, the more my health fails. It's very discouraging.
I just really feel like I am falling apart.
Enough negativity.
Oh yes....I have lost five pounds. Woot woot - go me....:)
Anyway.
My son Connor is in two parades this Memorial Day weekend, one on Sunday, one on Monday. Tomorrow, he is going on a canoe/kyak trip with his schools Environmental Club. This evening, Michael and Katy, Ian and Cameron are testing for their next belts in karate. So needless to say, this is going to be a busy three day weekend.
The kids have five days of school left. Tuesday - Friday next week and the following Monday. Then on the 4th, I am going to a Love Emmaus walk for four days. Then Katy starts the Summer Enrichment program at her school.
Oh, and by the way, she came in 5th place in the first grade spelling bee. We are very proud of her. She is one sharp little cookie.
I am signing Katy and Ian up for the summer reading program at the library which we do every year.
And we are getting a pool membership again this summer. That was money well spent. It accomplishes a number of things: it keeps the kids active and physically fit, it keeps us away from home and the kids running in and out and running up the electric bill and roasting the house up, it keeps me active and moving and is really good for my injured leg, and it is cheap entertainment which keeps the kids cool and comfortable.
And talking about money, we finally caved in and applied for help. In his job search, Michael is finding jobs, but none here in Ohio. And he would have to find something making 60K a year or more for us to be able to afford to move from Ohio. Ohio's unemployment is up to 10.5% now - there just aren't that many good paying jobs. Anyway, back to help...we were approved for almost $600 per month in food stamps and for the Medicaid insurance. It is humbling and embarassing to have to ask for help but finances are really strained here. The gal who did our case said her caseload is up from about 10 per to week to about 40 per week. So it's not just us. That's somewhat mollifying.
I really hope this recession ends soon.
